The “Forest Environmental Monitoring Brandenburg” platform makes the results of forest environmental monitoring in the state of Brandenburg publicly accessible: the condition, health and vitality of the forest.

From the forest condition survey, soil condition survey and state forest inventory to long-term monitoring at the ICP Forests Level II sites, long-term measurements are processed and visualised. Climatic analyses and drought stress evaluations show how the forest is doing.

All data is available for your own use via an open API. A service of the State Forestry Agency Brandenburg, developed for the Forestry Competence Centre Eberswalde (LFE).

The Waldzustandserhebung (WZE) app is the field data capture tool for forest environmental monitoring. The annual crown condition survey and further inventories are recorded digitally right at the monitoring plot – with or without a network connection.

Recording forms are generated from JSON schemas and can be adapted without shipping a new release. A map with offline tile caching, external GNSS receivers over Bluetooth, azimuth and distance measurement and plausibility checks support the work in the stand. Recording and control groups work under the four-eyes principle: draft, submission, review, approval.

All data is held offline-first on the device and synchronises automatically as soon as a connection is available. The application runs as a PWA in the browser, as an Android app and as a desktop application for Windows and Linux. Developed for the Forestry Competence Centre Eberswalde (LFE), with the source code openly available.

Felsentaube is an offline-first field map for laying out alignments. Routes are recorded in the field vertex by vertex – from the crosshair at the centre of the map or straight from the device's GPS fix – and stored as GeoJSON.

The map is built on MapLibre with switchable basemaps, 3D terrain and elevations, from which the slope distance of a route is derived. Besides the internal GPS, external NMEA receivers can be attached over Bluetooth. The app and every map tile already viewed are cached, the routes live in the device's local storage: no network, no account, no server.

Sharing works by QR code, by link – the route travels inside the link itself, because there is no server to put it on – or as a GeoJSON file for further processing in QGIS.

The plug-in „Forest Inventory Monitoring“ (FIM) is used for the forest inventory „Regeneration Status and Game Influence Monitoring“ (VWM) carried out in Brandenburg as a forest inventory according to § 30 LWaldG.

For the use of alternative communication options, Grünecho have developed an audio-visual system (FoVis) for forestry.

The feasibility study, commissioned by the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, shows opportunities to adapt communication in the forest to data-supported forestry.

FoVis enables access to stand data, position data of carriers and colleagues at any time; without having to pick up a mobile phone. It is also possible to collect data without having to stand still. Sensors can detect falls and knocks and make emergency calls....

This QGIS plugin allows you to display your current position (using an internal or external GPS device) on the map. For selected target points, the distance is displayed in kilometres, metres and centimetres, and angles in either degrees, gons or radians. The air line between your current position and the destination point is visualised on the map. Once the target position has been reached, points can be measured. For this purpose, data is collected until the desired quality is achieved. In the settings of the plug-in, requirements for the accuracy of the position determination can be defined. When the quality is achieved, the data can be saved in a GeoPackage. A layer is created for this purpose. The data can then be further processed in QGIS or other applications.
